From its roots in petroleum-related enterprises beginning in 1954, Ergon now operates as an advanced crude oil processor, transporter and marketer of refined products. It has evolved into a worldwide network of market-leading companies employing over 2,600 people, with subsidiaries operating 60 facilities in 25 US states, with oil and other Ergon products being distributed globally from bases in Europe, Asia, South America, Mexico, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.
With a focus on controlled growth, capital discipline and safe and reliable operations, Ergon saw an opportunity to gain a competitive edge amongst its industry peers by standardizing and strengthening its approach to EHS management with a global system for use across all its operations.
Ergon prioritized requirements for its EHS Management Information System based on priming the company for growth and acquisition globally, with a focus on better enterprise risk management. They wanted to focus on EHS business processes rather than specific statutory requirements to ensure an enterprise-wide deployment. The project was conducted in 2 phases, Phase 1 delivering Ergon Incident Management, Action Plans and EHS Metrics and Reporting. With that successfully rolled out, the project teams started to tackle their more complex challenge in Phase 2: Air Quality Management and Compliance, which included integrating tank emissions modelling into air quality monitoring and reporting across diverse Ergon businesses.
Ergon is seeing positive company-wide impacts particularly on culture and collaboration with key results such as consolidation of events across all the company, standardised reporting and corrective action processes and automated validation of emissions data across all facilities. The systems enables to analyze the costs of incidents and sparks new discussions on real issues and incident reduction.
