Indicators of Success for an EHS Software Implementation

As with all SPF events, sessions from Enablon clients will also be featured, providing valuable takeaways that EHS peers can share with their colleagues in their organizations. At SPF Calgary 2017, Nexen, a multi-billion dollar oil and gas firm headquartered in Calgary, will share perspectives on their Enablon implementation project, alongside CH2M, an Enablon partner. The presentation will include details about the project, lessons learned, and more importantly, indicators of success.

What do we mean by “Indicators of Success”? The criteria used to determine whether an EHS software implementation is successful can vary by industry, organization and project scope (solutions, geographies, facilities, etc.). This criteria should nevertheless be defined because it helps to answer the following question: “How do you know the project was a success?”

During the Nexen/CH2M case study that will be presented at SPF Calgary, attendees will learn more about the specific indicators of success that the Enablon client used to evaluate the implementation project. Here’s a sample of the indicators and questions that help determine success rates:

  • Root Cause Analysis. This helps identify underlying or systemic causes of an incident, rather than general or immediate ones. Is the EHS management software providing capabilities to identify and address root causes of incidents? Are such capabilities easy to use?
  • Knowledge Sharing. For organizations with multiple sites, there is a high probability that one similar event will be experienced by at least two different parts of the organization, albeit not simultaneously. Does the EHS software help communicate lessons learned from events throughout the organization in a quick and user-friendly way, to help prevent recurrences?
  • Data Capture and Access. Ultimately, an EHS management software must help users perform their tasks better and easier, to make them more effective in their roles. What percentage of users report improvements in capturing event information? What percentage report easier access to data? Are users reporting substantial time savings from using the EHS system?
