New research shows how CEOs can play a more effective role in developing an organizational safety climate that actually reduces injuries. Researchers found that CEOs in their study indirectly influenced workers’ experience of injuries by promoting an overarching safety climate in their organization, achieved through the collective learning experiences and efforts of the CEOs’ top management team, managers, and supervisors. On June 13, 2013, there was a catastrophic equipment failure, explosion and fire at a chemical plant in Louisiana. The U.S. Chemical Safety Board investigated the incident and recently released its investigation report. This article summarizes some of the key lessons from the incident, including lessons related to safety culture. Read more
OSHA, American Staffing Association and National Safety Council partnered on a fictional case study that provides staffing agencies and host employers information to better protect temporary workers. The case study also provides an example for which party could be found responsible for injury recordkeeping of temporary workers. The case was modeled after citations OSHA commonly issues related to temporary workers’ on-the-job injuries. Read more
OSHA requires employers to make Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) readily accessible to employees for all hazardous chemicals in the workplace. U.S. workers working with hazardous chemicals should know by now how to read and understand an SDS, because the first GHS deadline in OSHA’s revised HazCom standard was about employee training on chemical labels and SDSs.
