5 Ways Sustainability Performance Management has Positively Impacted Carlsberg

Carlsberg’s integrated approach to corporate sustainability can be taken as an interesting example of what an efficient sustainability strategy can bring to a company seeking to grow responsibly in today’s evolving, and often uncertain, business context.

Fourth largest brewer in the world and market leader in Northern and Eastern Europe, Carlsberg commercializes its products in 150 markets. In 2014 alone, 37 billion bottles of Carlsberg Group beers were sold worldwide.

In addition, under the overarching goal of ‘growing responsibly together’, Carlsberg applies the principles of sustainability performance management specifically to three main areas: resources and the environment, health and wellbeing, and people and policies.

1. A move towards integration, efficiency and simplicity

The overall challenge was to move away from an excel-based reporting system, only covering a few environmental indicators, in order to deliver a fully integrated solution that would drive performance by improving efficiency, simplifying workflows and facilitating data collection across all CSR areas.

2. Increased reporting agility

Other than data for benchmarking, CSR reports are one of the main outputs of Carlsberg’s current sustainability management process. In addition to being able to gather and centralize better quality comparative data faster, the company is now able to produce and launch its annual CSR and financial reports jointly by the 1st of March.

3. Improved tracking of environmental indicators

Today, Carlsberg efficiently tracks its CO2 emissions as well as its water and energy consumption. In the five years since deploying the Enablon platform, CO2 emissions have declined by 17% and water and energy consumption has decreased by 3% and 9% respectively.

4. Faster data consolidation and presentation of results

A tailored approach was taken to speed up processes and ease data collection and consolidation. Over the years, Carlsberg’s Enablon platform has grown to be deployed across 100+ breweries, reaching 600+ global users, spanning 8 CSR policy areas and working in 3 languages. In turn, this has significantly strengthened transparency as well as internal and external stakeholder engagement, around both the data collection process and final outputs (CSR reports).

In addition to more efficient data consolidation, the improved quality of the collected data has also contributed to easing external verification and enabling a more transparent audit trail.

5. Enhanced CSR and management of change

In 2008 Carlsberg initiated its new global framework for sustainability, under which new global CSR policies were developed, and in 2010 the company signed the UN Global Compact. In this context, joining forces with Enablon has also helped Carlsberg to achieve its CSR-specific sustainability performance objectives, especially thanks to:

  • Enhanced policy implementation and follow-through in areas such as labor and human rights, responsible  drinking, community engagement, environment, and health and safety.
